Introduction

What is sight? Is it the ability to see or the ability to see well? What is the use of the eye? To see or to perceive? Does man see and perceive everything correctly? Sometimes man needs to be blinded to see.

“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” – Genesis 3:7

For the longest time, I never knew what the Bible meant when it stated that Adam & Eve’s eyes were opened. Were they blind? How did they navigate? How could Adam name all those animals? How did Eve see the serpent? What does the Bible really mean when it says that ‘their eyes were opened?’

It was not until one day that I had a headache and I went to Google to search for the cause of my headache. I scrolled tons of web pages and I was shocked to see the many horrifying causes of a mere headache. I later became conscious of them and was in great fear.

This also happened when I exposed myself to the different causes of other ailments like cancer. For a while, I stopped using my microwave, I was cautious of buying mboga from the streets as I feared that they were grown from polluted waters and I almost left Nairobi because of pollution.

My consciousness changed from what I previously knew to what I was newly exposed to. Over the years, I have realized that when you are very conscious of what you are exposed to, you become it. Simply put, if you are conscious of getting fat, you become fat. If you are conscious of being broke, you actually become broke.

But Christ came to set you free and free indeed. And that’s why He needs to blind you of many things to give you a new sight.

The Eye

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! – Matthew 6:22-23

For now, forget the Scientific eye, and let’s focus on perception. Let’s forget about the organ and let’s focus on consciousness. Jesus was not talking about the organ, He was talking about man’s consciousness.

Adam had eyes and had clear sight before but after eating from the tree, he realized he was naked. Adam was one with God. His consciousness was only about his Creator and his mandate from God. He walked with God. He dwelled with Him and in Him but he hid after eating the fruit.

Why did God ask Him where he was? God is omnipresent and doesn’t need to ask where man is.

The Lord God called to Adam, “Why are you hiding?” And Adam replied, “I heard you coming and didn’t want you to see me naked. So I hid.” “Who told you you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten fruit from the tree I warned you about?” – Genesis 3:9-11

When Adam ate from the fruit, he ceased walking with God. He was no longer in the consciousness of His Creator. He was exposed to another reality. A new reality that formed his consciousness. He realized that he had lost dominion, was fallible, and naked. He was also conscious of sin.

Adam was blinded of the consciousness of God and was now perceiving his fallibility. This is why all through the Bible God has always strived to bring man back to His consciousness. Jesus came to bring us back to that consciousness, to bring us back to the dominion we lost.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” – Luke 4:18

Jesus would have said something like ‘heal the disabled’ to generalize His statement but He specifically said ‘give sight to the blind’. Do you think it was about physical blindness?

Spiritual Blindness

Jesus came to restore the sight of men. The world was blinded with religion; Pharisees were expectant of signs and wonders, Gentiles were just but a perverse generation etc. The world was dark with all kinds of atrocities but God came to intervene. This is why Jesus firmly says that He is the truth and the light,

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12

Many people are Spiritually blind because their consciousness is of the world. Many people believe that the supernatural God ceased to exist because they have not seen Him heal the physically blind nor heard a voice straight from Heaven.

But these miracles still exist and some still hear voices straight from Heaven. Some, to date, still have visitations from angels and even God Himself. Prophets also live amongst us. So why do some experience God and others just talk about Him on their lips? The answer is simple – Consciousness.

If I know that education is the only key to success, then I will call a poor uneducated person who just became a millionaire, lucky. If I know that it is doctors who heal then it will be so difficult for me not get miraculous healing.

In John 5:6, Jesus asks the lame man, “Do you wish to get well?. In Matthew 9:28 when the two blind men came to Jesus, He asked them, “Do you believe that I can heal you?. Why did He keep asking them if they believed?

In John 11 Jesus tells Martha, Lazarus’ sister

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Note that He asks her, “Do you believe this?”. Why is belief so important?

Belief forms one’s consciousness. If I believe that I should not eat meat from certain animals, I will be conscious of any meat that I eat. If I believe that a place is haunted, I will be conscious of any eerie feeling that may arise.

One will also partake of what is in their consciousness. If I believe that Jesus heals, I will partake of that because it forms my consciousness. This is why He kept asking people if they believe because that was the only way they could partake of what He was to offer to them.

This also explains why religious persons are so deeply rooted in their doctrines. Their belief has formed their consciousness. If their doctrine teaches them that a day of the week is Holy and should not be messed around with, they will hold onto that with ultimate passion.

This also explains why religious persons get so infuriated when what they believe in is challenged.

So what is righteousness? Are you righteous? Some doctrines state that no one is righteous but Christ. But you are righteous. The day you gave your life to Christ you became righteous. It is no longer you that lives but Christ who lives in you.

Righteousness means ‘right standing’. If you are in right standing with God, you become righteous. As this is a broad topic, I will cover it in a separate article.

Again, what is sin? Is it the action? Sin is not the action. It is failing to be in the ‘right standing’ with God. If man deviates from being in the right standing of God, they will act what is contrary to God. Again I will cover this in a separate article.

I had to mention what righteousness and sin are to explain this point; spiritual blindness is simply not being in right standing with God. Someone who is Spiritually blind is not righteous. This is why in Matthew 6:23 the Bible asks, “If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

I ask, ‘if you do not believe that the miraculous working God, how great is that darkness?’

Conclusion

Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus. – Acts 9:8

The Bible tells us that Saul’s (Paul) eyes were open but he could not see. Why? He was blinded. He was blinded so that He could see. Today God wants to blind you. God wants to blind you of all the contrary beliefs you have about healing, prosperity, wellness, joy, happiness etc.

He needs to set you free! Are you ready to get blinded or are your eyes clogged to religious doctrine?

If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. – John 8:36
